Newsstand Books
Business
In 2012 we tried Newsstand Books which was a venture that never worked! It was sister site of big brother and 'World's Largest Online Newsagent' Newsstand.
Newsstand Books allowed people to purchase out-of-print books, and also submit their own books to the website to have printed for personal use (presents for family and friends/university dissertations) or to put the book up onto the website for sale to the general public and receive commission for every copy sold.
Unfortunately, the on demand print machine never ran in the manner needed to make this a viable business and it had to be abandoned.
Technical
Having provided the IT to build it's older brother Newsstand up from nothing into a multi-million £ business, we had all of the knowledge and tool in place to help make Newsstand Books into a success.
The site was built using a database and ASP.Net structure. It had a front-end containing search tools, eCommerce facilities and book submission tool to enable users to have their own books published. A MyAccount page allowing users to manage their own Newsstand Books purchases, royalties and much more.
Behind this was a very robust system allowing Newsstand to manage the order/printing process and every other aspect of the business.
You learn a great deal from failures!
